Day 1: The First Bardo - The Clear Light of Reality
On the first day after death, the consciousness of the deceased enters the Chikhai Bardo, the first stage of the intermediate state. This is a critical moment where the soul encounters the Clear Light of Reality, a profound and radiant manifestation of ultimate truth.
What Happens:
The deceased experiences a dazzling, pure light, which is the direct expression of the true nature of mind. This light is described as blindingly bright, yet peaceful and all-encompassing.
This is the first opportunity for the soul to recognize and merge with the Clear Light, which represents enlightenment or liberation from the cycle of rebirth (samsara).
If the deceased has practiced meditation or spiritual preparation during their lifetime, they may recognize this light as their own true nature and achieve liberation (Dharmakaya).
Guidance for the Deceased:
The text advises the deceased to remain calm and fearless, to recognize the Clear Light as their own mind, and to embrace it without hesitation.
If the soul fails to recognize the Clear Light due to fear, confusion, or lack of preparation, it will move on to the next stage of the Bardo.
Visual Representation:
