Day 1: The First Bardo - The Clear Light of Reality

On the first day after death, the consciousness of the deceased enters the Chikhai Bardo, the first stage of the intermediate state. This is a critical moment where the soul encounters the Clear Light of Reality, a profound and radiant manifestation of ultimate truth.

What Happens:

  • The deceased experiences a dazzling, pure light, which is the direct expression of the true nature of mind. This light is described as blindingly bright, yet peaceful and all-encompassing.

  • This is the first opportunity for the soul to recognize and merge with the Clear Light, which represents enlightenment or liberation from the cycle of rebirth (samsara).

  • If the deceased has practiced meditation or spiritual preparation during their lifetime, they may recognize this light as their own true nature and achieve liberation (Dharmakaya).

Guidance for the Deceased:

  • The text advises the deceased to remain calm and fearless, to recognize the Clear Light as their own mind, and to embrace it without hesitation.

  • If the soul fails to recognize the Clear Light due to fear, confusion, or lack of preparation, it will move on to the next stage of the Bardo.

Visual Representation:

  • Images: A radiant, all-encompassing light, often depicted as a luminous mandala or a glowing sphere.

  • Symbols: The Clear Light can be represented by abstract, glowing patterns or serene, otherworldly landscapes.
